Professor, physicist, poet, and classical singer — Charu Kapoor is proof that passion and profession don’t have to live in separate worlds. They can, in fact, flow together like a perfectly tuned raga. It isn’t every day that a physicist moves an audience to tears — not through formulas or theories, but through music and verse. Yet Charu does this with effortless grace.

“Science sharpens my mind, but music and poetry feed my soul,” she says, capturing in one sentence the duality she embodies.

A Scholar With Soul

Armed with a PhD in superconductivity from Delhi University, Charu Kapoor has presented her research at prestigious institutions like Oxford, Cambridge, and Taiwan. Her academic résumé is that of a meticulous scientist, someone devoted to precision, logic, and clarity.

But beyond the equations lies another world — one filled with rhythm, emotion, and melody.

Trained in Hindustani classical music since age 16, she is a disciple of the legendary Dagar Brothers and Savita Devi. Her performances at the India International Centre and the historic Vice Regal Lodge showcase a voice steeped in tradition yet alive with contemporary emotion.

From Legacy of Nautch Girls in Indian Cinema to Tribute to Lata, Asha & Gita Dutt, her concerts draw audiences that include both connoisseurs of art and admirers of academia.

A Night of Melodies and Memories

Her most recent performance, A Tribute to the Sisters: Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle, was a nostalgic celebration of India’s most iconic voices. For Charu, it felt like a homecoming.

“Performing ‘Aaiye Meherbaan’ felt like welcoming an old friend,” she shares. “Every note carried a piece of India’s musical heritage.”

The evening unfolded with beloved classics — Raat Akeli Hai, Chura Liya Hai, In Aankhon Ki Masti Ke, Man Kyun Bahka — songs that instantly transported listeners to the eras they belonged to.

Poetry in Motion

Music is just one of Charu’s languages. The other is poetry.

Writing in the Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb, her verse explores tenderness, separation, longing, and memory. Her poem Amaltas won the Asian Literary Society’s Wordsmith Award in 2019, affirming her status as a poet who writes not just with technique, but with heart.

Her upcoming poetry collection is already eagerly anticipated, while her online page Kuchh Ehsas continues to gather readers who find comfort in her words.

The Harmony of Many Worlds

From winning the Indian Women Achievers Award 2020 to performing at literary festivals such as Valley of Words and the Dehradun Literature Festival, Charu Kapoor has shown that intellect and intuition can coexist beautifully.

“I never saw physics and poetry as opposites,” she reflects. “Both are about patterns — one in nature, the other in emotions.”

Married to a senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, she balances her personal, professional, and artistic worlds with remarkable ease — proving that a life can be multifaceted without being fragmented.

A Symphony Well-Lived

For Charu Kapoor, life is a composition — one where every discovery, every performance, and every poem is a note contributing to a greater harmony.

Between notes and numbers, between equations and emotions, she has created her own music — and it’s a melody that lingers long after the final word or final note fades.
